Could you tell me what the most hostile atmosphere was that you played in when you were a pro please?

Asked Phil Neville once on twitter, he said Fener. Also asked Gary Neville worst place for taking the **** with pitch, said Real Madrid - used to be absolutely awash with water on the surface that their Groundstaff had put on.

I remember going in for a sliding tackle at Preston early in the game when they had that plastic pitch. The resulting burns made me think about adapting my game that day

Aldershot away was a bit naughty, not so much on the pitch but afterwards trying to get on the coach, few fists were flung.
Also at Sunderland we played boro away and our bus was stoned on the fly over, about 100 people were waiting for us,had to drive up the A19 with no windows.
Playing wise Swansea supporters were quite vicious, same with milwall but not really intimidating.I was in the Sunderland squad for Newcastle Derby and that was pure hate, and being a Geordie it seemed worse. I spoke to Andy Hughes not long ago and he mentioned the 3-1 win v Leeds under john ward and he said the atmosphere that day really got to him and Leeds players.he said once we equalised it was like the crowd pulled in the second and third,it was one of them games I just knew we would go onto win.
I loved playing at forest,we always seemed to do well, hated Brentford, small tight and bobbly!

Cheers, interesting what you say about Brentford, I actually asked as I was thinking about different atmospheres and pitches following that Faroes match last night - watched them v Northern Ireland few year back and thought the pitch was quite small and hard to play on and it is a decent time since they were hammered at home.

Lummy do you think it is harder to play in front of smaller, passionate crowds who seem right on the pitch or those like forest with bigger grounds but not quite as much in your face?
It must be a great buzz either way if you are playing well but awful if you aren't. How much were you able to shut out the atmosphere and just concentrate on the game?

I quite like ex footballers Q and A sessions, once asked Russell Coughlin who was the best opponent he played against i thought he might have said me but instead he went for Graeme Souness.

It's harder when the crowd are in a tight ground and next to the pitch for me,the bigger grounds you can shut it out,the playoff leg at elland road was a great atmosphere at the start, but we played well and silenced them which was very enjoyable.
Playing in front of standing areas which are packed and near the pitch creates a great atmosphere and you can really hear everyone, not so much in the bigger stadiums, you are very aware of the crowd though when playing.
No better feeling then playing, and playing well with the crowd behind you in full voice.

I was at elland road in the play off game. Dodgy as getting back to car after game. Great atmosphere like you say and a great performance. Only spoiled by a ref desperate to play on until Leeds scored.

It's harder when the crowd are in a tight ground and next to the pitch for me. Aye an old lass with an umbrella once brayed me on the back of the head in a rugby league match when I made a break down the wing. It turned out she was the mother of a lad I'd flattened with a man and ball tackle a little earlier. It hurt so much and was so unexpected I scopped the ball away.

I was playing for the Hornets away at Kells that particular day. I was about 17 at the time, and quite a big lad, but that didn't bother her at all, she was a hard looking old thing to be fair, and I didn't even argue with her.

And they point to Rugby League as an example of harmonious supporters !... they should try the Cumb Amateur game, its got everything, Referees punched, spectators sent off... even saw a linesman sent off one day.
Incidentally we used to have an illness called 'Kells-itis' that was when players wouldn't turn up for Kells away !

I played in a semi final of the amateur league, might have been that same season, it was played at Hensingham and it was against Grasslot (at the time, can't remember what they're called these days), I managed to get away in our 25, and was away up the pitch, got past halfway and I heard "Fitz, you might as well stop it isn't going to count". I glanced back, and there was only Gary Nixon (went on to play for Workington) still after me, and it was him who was shouting. Well he was a prop (and a good mate) so I stopped, knowing I could set off again and still beat him to the line. Anyway we looked back and all the other players and coaches and the ref were scrapping in our 25. It went on ages and me and Nixon stood on halfway passing the ball to each other while it all got sorted, the ref abandoned it and the other semi counted as the final.
When I was a lad, we used to have to get changed in the Haigh Pit shower area when we played Kells, and the pitch was very exposed, wind fair howled across it. That's before you got to the spectators.
I have to say however, I made some friends from Kells that have been good mates ever since.

I don't think there's anywhere worse than Lowca, played there once when the snow was on the ground. I've never been so jealous of a teammate who was sent off as on that day, every part of me was purple.

A bit off track, but do any of you west lot remember the snow in 1996,i was in Tangier street in Whitehaven when the roads got gridlocked,it took me 6 hours to get from the bus station to the Howgate hotel where i abandoned my van and tried to get a room in the hotel,no chance they were people sleeping on mattress's in the function room, knowing the area well i trudged down to Lowca and got a room in a B and B,one of my workmates managed to get in the hotel at Parkgate but 2 others had to spend the night in their vans.
