I was at the Kennedy Space Centre last year, if its your thing, you will love it, if not, avoid. Tampa bay is nice, Busch Gardens has better rides that Universal in my opinion, they are proper roller-coasters, whereas Universal, although entertaining, has only about 3. The rest there are 3D and auditorium experiences. The Everglades was a good few hours out on one of them power boats. The crocs are fed so there is no real danger.
I was advised to avoid International drive, but I found it one of the better places to be. Safe, clean and has literally everything. the iRide trolley is 2 dollars for any journey on it.
Wet & Wild waterpark or Aquatica are the better waterparks, great for "sightseeing" while the family are having fun.

Don't make the mistake of thinking Miami and Miami beach are the same,Miami beach is much nicer, ocean drive is nice on an evening watching all the fancy cars cruising up and down, the Everglades is O K for a day out,it,s a stunning drive down the Key's to Key West but don't try to do it in a day as i did stop overnight.

There is a few places where there are hot springs where you can go and swim with the manatees (dugongs). Brilliant experience I was there in winter at Three Sisters Springs not sure if they need or want the warm water as much in summer.

Just finished booking for Christmas New Year, this will be our 4th time. This year we are flying from Manchester to Dublin, Dublin to New York for 3 nights, flying to Miami and driving the 3 hours to Key West for 4 nights. Then driving about 5 hours across to Sanibel Island near Fort Myers for 6 nights before finishing up at Orlando for 3 nights on International Drive and flying back via Dublin again.
This will be our last trip as a full family I think as the boys are both 18+, (also have a 15 year old daughter) - although I said this last year! This is like a best of tour I guess. We have also stayed at Miami Beach, Naples, Clearwater, St Pete Beach....Key West and Sanibel Island were easily our favourites. As someone said I-drive is great and not at all tacky, we stay at the Rosen Inn Pointe Orlando and it is fine, only costs about £40 per night. Helps balance the cost as Key West and Sanibel are £200+ per night. If you need any tips let me know.

I've done something similar to Gingerballs above and am doing the same again this year. Flew into Miami and had a couple of nights - Ocean Drive is deffo worth a visit (but have been ripped off at one of the bars though, so be careful). Drove up to Aventura so this Missus could have a few days shopping (the Mall there is ridiculous - absolutely huge) and then drove across "Alligator Alley" (the rest areas are crazy, pools/swamp areas with Alligators) to Cape Coral (which is next to Fort Myers) for a weeks relax. To give you some Idea, I paid £1,300 (split between 2) for this place: www.capecoral4vacation.com/vacation-rental-home.asp?PageDataID=43299. There's hundreds on homeaway.co.uk - also had somewhere in Palm Springs from the website, never a problem, worth a look.

Hey, born and raised in Miami, specifically Miami Beach. Miami and Miami Beach are a bit different since Dade County is so big, but as long as you in NE then it's fine. Once you start getting to NW, SW, or SE Miami then it's a bit different, as we have different neighborhoods around there; Little Havana, Doral, Kendal, Hialeah. Much better to stick on the beach and check out downtown and midtown as a tourist, that's where all the action is. Outside of Miami the Keys are my absolute favorite. Less tourists there, and it has a really different feel than Miami. Less high rises, more pastel colored buildings, horrible mangrove smell everywhere. It's lovely. I definately suggest checking this place out pennekamppark.com/ as it has some awesome snorkeling.

Are you in Miami now blueman? I'm here until September if you fancy grabbing a drink and discussing the blues.
