As an exile, and having only managed to see 3 or 4 games in the last 5 years (since emigration) I find it difficult to assess our true potential. So I'd love to hear what you regulars have to say.
Incidentally one of my favourite memories is going to Newcastle in 68(?) when we beat them with a Tommy Murray goal and an Alan Ross penalty save in front of over 52,000. Newcastle had a really good team then and our lads played the game of their lives. Could we do a similar job at the Stadium of Light?

We played well at Everton. Livesey hit the bar at 1-1, could have easily been different. I definitely think we have a good chance. Especially as they have Man Ure 3 days later, could work in our favour.

This game is what makes the FA Cup the competition it is. If all of our 14 players play to their full potential and have a bit of luck, I can see us at least getting a replay against a club that is low in confidence and has far more important things to worry about this season, than a one-off game against a tier 3 club.

Sunderland have to organise their priorities for January.
They begin the month having played key Premiership games at Cardiff and home to Aston Villa 4 days before the Cup match. Two days after the Cup match they have the home leg of the League Cup Semi-Final and then on the Saturday they have a crucial Premiership match at Fulham.
As Sunderland manager I know what my priorities would be. In no way would I risk my best players in a 'blood and guts' FA Cup 3rd Round match. I would not want them to get fatigued, booked, sent off, injured etc when there are bigger things immediately at stake.

Something tells me that Sunderland havent made this fixture, or the competition a priority. 2 games from the final in the league cup, i reckon they will field a weakened team.

hope so, would a draw and replay exasperate their situation? wonder what our BOD do regarding ticket pricing if we went to a replay?

Some very good points there especially regarding the games they have coming up and what their priorities are at the moment. Are our players good enough? What do you think?

if they all play their top game at the same time, they've a good chance of a result.

We have an uncanny knack of raising our game against better opposition, conversely, struggling to hit a barn door against teams 3 leagues below.

as mentioned, Livesy forced a great save out of Howard, tipping his shot onto the bar at 1-1. could have been so different.

That and an unfortunate backpass from clayton that gifted them a goal.

As with any cup-tie it'll be all on the day.
We shouldn't be able to match them technically, or even possibly in most cases athletically, but if we at least match - and hopefully better them - for dogged never-say-die effort & enthusiasm who knows!
You have to be more confident than a few months ago that's for sure. Maybe 1-2 with the quality of young Lawrence.

Thats if Lawrence stays. His loan ends on the 4th, we play on the 5th.

We all think it will be a second string put out by Poyet but at least it means that Keiren will play. Although they are better quality players, it gives us a chance as, hopefully, the Club's priorities are elsewhere. Back to BP I reckon.

Whatever team that Sunderland use they would not want a replay ten days later. Going into the next Round (on January 25th) or going out, either would be better than a FA Cup replay.
So, if the match is level with 15 minutes to play they may pour forward and thus leave gaps. We can play an orthodox formation throughout. A replay is most assuredly no problem for us.

I am in two minds about him, he served our club very well, and it will be nice to give him a good reception. On the other hand, he's a bloody good goalkeeper and we stand a better chance without him on the field.

I thought Westwood had been dropped again ?
Been a bit of a waste of his career going to Sunderland imo

he could do with letting a couple of soft goals in and us getting into the fourth round as compensation for the Coventry sell on clause that didn't happen.
